Are there alternatives to the bergen findeisen theory?

Hi basic theory is that in a cloud ice crystals will grow at the expense of water droplets, with all rain starting as snow, and with no ice crystals there would be no rain.
Obviously in tropical climates you get rain with temps always above freezing point for a number of reasons, thus proving this theory is not universal.
