Are there any examples where next-gen technology was stymitised due to bad branding?

Google use to be called BackRub and a "marketing expert" suggested that Google wouldn't have been successful if they had remained BackRub. I suspect this is rubbish but is there any examples of tech that was significantly better than other tech at the time but through branding lost out?
