Mychorrizal fungi are a type of fungi that have a strong symbiosis with vascular plant root systems, providing fixed Nitrogen (N) from N2 to the plant roots in exchange for starch. Therefore, fungi are an essential step in the carbon cycle, allowing vascular plants to respire.
