How do open and closed kinetic chain exercises differ?

Open chain exercises are exercises where the distal segment (hand or foot) is free to move.

Closed chain is the opposite, with the distal segment (hand/foot) fixed.

 

Open chain example: Chest press.

Closed chain example: Pushup.
