Is the rate of return on investment a measure of liquidity, profitability, risk or certainty?

The rate of return on an investment is a measure of the gain (or loss) of a particular investment over a particular timeframe. This is usually a percentage increase over and above the initial price of the original investment. A rate of return on an investment is primarily a measure of profitability.
