A creditor is a person or institution that lends money (gives credit) to another person on the condition that the money will be paid back at some later date usually with some interest. A debtor is a person or institution that borrows money. If the debtor borrows money from a bank, it is referred to as a loan. If the debtor uses securities to obtain money, the debtor is said to have issued the security e.g. a bond.
